The colors of fall are arriving soon! Join MAD Art’s Plein Air classes and capture them on canvas. Plein air refers to the type of painting done “in the open air”.  With an easel and paints in tow, and an appealing location and subject, the artist works quickly to capture the scene. Choose to work in your preferred medium. All skill levels are welcome and no previous experience is necessary. For additional information please call Joyce at 228-2028.

Joyce Halliday Smith

Oil painting “en plein air” is Joyce’s passion. She chooses oils for their richness, depth and variety of colors. Joyce graduated from Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY, majoring in fine art, with an art history minor, and received a Masters of Fine Art degree from Syracuse University. She has been in numerous juried exhibitions and has won awards in Rhode Island, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Joyce has taught at Syracuse University and Stockton College, and for several years, enjoyed teaching art classes for adults and children.

GOLDEN Field Trip – Tuesday, September 20

Treat yourself to an exciting afternoon at the Golden Paints facility near New Berlin. Learn about the history of this employee owned company and how Golden’s artist paint application technicians work with artists to develop and improve their products.  Enjoy demonstrations of their acrylic Artist Paints lines, followed by an opportunity to try them in the workroom setting. The group will have an opportunity to view the current Larry Poons exhibit in the Sam & Adele Golden Gallery, and tour the “new” 100 year-old barn, which will house artist residences.

Registration is required no later than September 13^th. Participants will meet in the parking lot behind the Hamilton Public Library at 1pm.

Clay Work “Boxes” – Thursdays, Oct. 20, 27 & Nov. 3            10am-noon

Instructor: Cate Valk

Location:  37 Milford, Hamilton, Rear of Bldg.

MAD Art member $45/$50 non-member

Learn to use the slab method of working with clay, or further your skills. Cate Valk’s workshop focus will be to create boxes, trays, and cylinders. Various glazes will be available with which to experiment and express one’s self. All materials and firings are included.

Cate Valk graduated from The High School of Fashion Industries and attended Brooklyn College, majoring in art. She began working with clay in 1996, taking classes at Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute and attending numerous work- shops. Cate’s work has been exhibited at MAD Art Community Art Space, Hamilton Music Mix Festival, Hamilton Farmers’ Market, Skaneatles Craft Show, Cazenovia Craft Show, and many galleries in Central NY. She teaches in her home studio, Clay Play Studio.

Introduction to MOSAICS          Saturday, October 1         10AM-2PM

Instructor: Cathy Marsh

Location: First Baptist Church, Hamilton

Learn the ancient art of the mosaic. Participants will make a small picture frame using a choice of materials. Basic use of hand tools, adhesives, and grout will be covered, as will ideas for the mosaic design.  Cathy says, “Some participants go on to make gifts for family members. Some become addicts!” so much is their love for this craft.

Cathy Marsh lives, works, and dreams in Whitesboro, NY. She minored in fine art in Washington State. She studied scenic art with Rachel Keebler of Colbalt studios in the Catskills, with Martin Alan Hirsch’s studio in Louisville, KY, and is a licensed Faux Effects finisher. She has done mural work, faux work, and mosaic installations in homes, businesses, and churches, and scenic work for several local ballet companies and schools. Her personal art is always related to personal symbolisms of her inner life, spiritual life, and the world around her.

Southwestern Cuisine - Monday, October 3   6:30-8:30PM

What could be better than Southwestern flavored inspirations for fall cuisine? Join others in learning about the spices and herbs that enhance southwest cooking. And learn by doing! Help prepare the ingredients and share in the making of a few of Leslie’s favorite dishes from this region. Then taste!

Leslie Yacavone comes from a family of renowned professional chefs and restaurateurs and has a life-long passion for cooking. Four years ago, as owner of The Peppermill, a kitchenware store, in Hamilton, NY, Leslie began offering cooking classes to her clientele. Since then the classes in have grown in popularity – offering French, Thai, Indian, Chinese cuisines, and more! Leslie also caters and does special events for the community and Colgate University.

Chinese Brush Painting – Sunday, October 23      noon– 4 pm

Led by expert watercolorist Jane Taylor through the artful techniques used in Chinese brush painting, participants will learn about the basic tools employed in this delightful medium. Learn to properly hold the Chinese brush and practice the strokes on practice paper before executing your final work on rice paper. Rice paper will be available for purchase at a nominal fee. *A materials list will be provided to registering participants.

Jane G. Taylor is a signature member of the Central New York Watercolor

Society. Her special artistic interests include Chinese brush painting and mural painting.  Jane has demonstrated and taught Chinese brush painting extensively

in the Central New York and the Mohawk Valley region. She has exhibited widely and has had several solo exhibitions, winning several awards for her Chinese brush painting, both regionally and nationally.

Illuminated Initials – November 19          9am-noon

Instructor: Bev Choltco-Devlin

Location: Hamilton Public Library, Community Room

MAD Art member $20/$25 non-member

Participants will create their own illuminated (decorated) initial letter inspired by such works as The Book of Kells, the Lindisfarne Gospel, the Book of Days and those of William Blake.  You can model your letter after the traditional forms and styles used by illuminators over the millennia or feel free to create your own expressive initial with motifs and symbols from your own life.  Fundamentals of letterform construction will be covered as a starting point.  All basic paper and supplies will be supplied but an optional materials list will be provided to registered participants. No prior lettering, drawing or calligraphic experience is needed.  This workshop is intended for teens and adults.

Bev Choltco-Devlin has studied art and printmaking at the Academy of Art, the Museum of Modern Art and the DeYoung Museum in San Francisco, CA and the Munson-Williams Proctor Institute in Utica, along with taking several classes at MAD Art, Inc.  Her professional work in calligraphy has included clients in San Francisco (The Executive Forum and other several other corporate businesses), Colgate University, and a variety of commissioned works, as well as teaching a calligraphy workshop last fall. Beverly works as the reference and electronic resources specialist for the Mid-York Library System.

Wet Felted Handbag – Saturday, November 12          10AM-4PM

Instructor:  Susanne Farrington

Location: First Baptist Church, Hamilton

Class Limited to 6 adults

Create fabric by entangling hairs from sheep or other animals; just add warm soapy water, friction, and enough time for the project to gradually coalesce. Each participant will make a felt bag of colorful carded fleeces, resulting in a unique creation.  All materials included. Participants bring a thick bath towel, small scissors, an apron and a lunch or snacks. Wear comfortable shoes for standing. For more information, call Susanne at 315-824-1106.

Susanne Farrington took a felting workshop with Jakobine Cordes in 2004 and has been doing it ever since, in cold weather, which is her off-season for pottery making.  She likes the fact that felting is practical, employs simple tools and work space, and fleece can be obtained locally at no cost if one is willing to prepare it by cleaning and teasing it.  Farrington makes felt hats, bags, and vests to sell, along with her pottery, at the Hamilton Farmers Market.

Plein Aire Painting Classes

Tuesdays, June 7, 14, 21, 28 and July 5

Tuition:  $100 members /$125 for non-members or $20/$25 per session

Enjoy painting outdoors on location in the Hamilton area with each session at a different site. Instructor, Joyce Halliday Smith will teach you how to quickly capture the scene. You will learn basics of composition, color theory and painting techniques. A list of materials needed and locations will be provided to registrants.

After being a successful graphic designer and illustrator for many years, she switched careers to her first passion and is painting full time. Joyce has taught at Syracuse University, Syracuse, NY, and Stockton College, Pomona, NJ. For several years, she enjoyed teaching art classes for adults and children at Jane Law’s Long Beach Island Studio and Gallery in Surf City, NJ, and later at the Wickford Art Association in Wickford, RI.

The 2011 Spring Show features Art of Hamilton & Colgate University.
