In New York, small towns shelter a burgeoning arts scene

It was six years ago that my husband, Jeff, introduced me to the tranquil Upstate New York towns on and near Route 20, between Lake George and the Finger Lakes. That’s where he attended Colgate University in the 1990s, and his tour there was colored by characters: Norm, who would cut his hair for $4 and also sold eggs; Crazy Eddie, who taught guitar out of a garage; and Mrs. F., a fraternity’s house-mom, who would storm to her trailer home whenever she felt underappreciated, only to be lured back with a copy of Soap Opera Digest.

Back then, we crashed a neighborhood pancake breakfast, drank dollar drafts, sipped milkshakes in an ice-cream stand parking lot. Southern Madison County and its apple-pie Fourth of July parades seemed sweet, for certain. But sophisticated? Decidedly not. So when I heard about the burgeoning art scene there, I was skeptical, and scheduled a tour of my own.

Call For Art – Member-Guest Fall Show

HAMILTON – MAD Art, Inc, – As Hamilton’s Community Art Space grows to include first floor space in the Lebanon Street Alley, we are looking for innovative artists and craftsman to submit art works to exhibit in their 2010 Member-Guest Exhibit. Any mediums are welcome especially any 3-D works, sculpture, jewelry, dolls, pottery, soap, handmade crafts and more.

Artwork will be accepted on Friday, August 13th, 12-6pm and Saturday, August 14th, 10-4pm. The exhibit will run from August 27th through October 30th.  Please visit for submission guidelines.

Plein Air Painting Sessions

Joyce Halliday Smith Painting

$20 per session for MAD Art members

$22 per session for non-members

Come to one class or to all.

Enjoy painting outdoors on location in the Hamilton area with each session at a different site. Instructor, Joyce Halliday Smith will teach you how to quickly capture the scene. You will learn basics of composition, color theory and painting techniques. An emphasis will be on using new “Open” acrylics from Golden Artist Colors, Inc., which remain wet on the palette much longer than traditional acrylics. Golden Artist Colors will provide the acrylic paint. A list of materials needed and locations will be provided to registrants.

Joyce is a graduate of Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY where her major was fine art and her minor area of study was art history. She continued her studies and received a Masters of Fine Art degree from Syracuse University. After being a successful graphic designer and illustrator for many years, she switched careers to her first passion and is painting full time. She has been in numerous juried exhibitions and has won awards in Rhode Island, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

Joyce has taught at Syracuse University, Syracuse, NY, and Stockton College, Pomona, NJ. For several years, she enjoyed teaching art classes for adults and children at Jane Law’s Long Beach Island Studio and Gallery in Surf City, NJ, and later at the Wickford Art Association in Wickford.
